Because her husband is having an affair, Michelle has a fling with a 17-year-old (Jake Gyllenhaal); meanwhile, Elizabeth breaks up with her sincere boyfriend (James LeGros) and falls into bed with a glib movie star (Dermot Mulroney). But no plot description will capture the exquisite pleasures of this movie; Lovely and Amazing is a superb kaleidoscope of moments, each new fragment shifting the whole into a new delightful pattern. The entire cast is outstanding; the script and direction of Nicole Holofcener (Walking and Talking) are subtle, funny, and sharply observed. –Bret Fetzer

The Iron Mask is set 20 years later, and Fairbanks (by now 43 years old) reprises his role as D’Artagnan as the older and more mature personal protector of young Louis XIV. When he tips a plot by the powerful cardinals to replace the heir to the throne with his twin brother, D’Artagnan reunites his aging compatriots of old for one last hurrah. Energetically directed by Allan Dwan, who guided Fairbanks through his biggest hit, Robin Hood, and handsomely designed by William Cameron Menzies (The Thief of Bagdad), this action-packed film moves through plot twists and conspiratorial machinations with quicksilver speed (it begins and ends with breathless chase scenes), but it also carries a dimension of melancholy: the musketeers are aging and the era of chivalry fading. The touching denoument, a scene both ebullient and affecting, becomes Fairbanks’s farewell to the silent screen. In a way the film is a farewell to the grace and energy of the silent cinema that almost disappeared in the early sound years. Fairbanks only appeared in five talkies before retiring in 1935. Kino’s edition features the 1952 reissu with narration by son Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and an orchestral score by Allan Gray. –Sean Axmaker

Wonderfully pointless, enthrallingly irrelevant, the Discovery Channel’s Monster Garage is a highly entertaining reality show about what it takes for complete strangers to cooperate 16 hours a day, 6 days in a row while re-tooling ordinary cars and vans into, well, really dumb but awesome stuff. Led by a heavily tattooed and likeable outlaw named Jesse James (yes, he claims to be a descendant of the original), each of the teams of mechanics, designers,and welders assembled in the first season’s 13 episodes are faced with such meaningless yet ultra-cool challenges as transforming a convertible sedan into a glorified, speedy lawn mower, or turning a van into a garbage truck, complete with a container-lifting arm that extends from behind a makeshift, gull-wing door.

Other engineering glories include a stretch limo adapted into a water-pumping firefighter, a sporty Chevrolet reinvented as a Zamboni (the team even gets an assist from Richard Zamboni, creator of the ice-rink smoother), a school bus reborn as a pontoon boat, and a pickup truck outfitted as a tree shaker (thus liberating many an almond from branches). Seeing these Frankenstein monster machines in action is fun, but the real kick from these shows is watching sundry loners and iconoclasts from the worlds of motorcycles and drag racing trying to get along together, and collaborating with folks from the auto industry, community colleges, and the arts world. Tensions run high, dramas become fascinating, hopes turn bleak, but somehow the mission is always met within time constraints and tight budgets. Monster Garage is good for kids, too, who discover that even outlaws need to know their geometry, hydraulics, and physics to be happy gear-heads. –Tom Keogh
